Make do and mend!

During the past couple of days we have had many lectures where we have covered a 100 years of fashion, in this time we have done mini projects, one being "make do and mend" , during the 1940's most women only had enough money for one outfit a year so the make do and mend phase came into fashion, re working old outfits, materials from around the house, anything they could find to reform and make something new.

So in the sprit of this we were asked to being in a vintage item, like a belt, scarf, dress, many things as long as we didnt mind cutting it up. We were then placed into groups where we had to bring our items together, along with other garments and fabrics that were placed in the class and reinvent an outfit.

To start out we focused our attention onto a 60's style blue dress, with the intention of turning it into a cape with hood and a micro skirt. However this did not go to plan, in haste we jumped into cutting away and not trying out things before hand, resulting in an item that looked poorly finished and when we asked our peers if they would wear the item, we had negative feedback.

So we decided to completely scrap the idea and start over, going in a new direction and focusing on a tie and some blue material, this worked out much better, with a clearer goal in mind and much more to work with, we decided to use the blue material as a bottom piece for a dress which we draped on the stand and tacked the fabric, then using a tartan material we went with a one shoulder style top with gathered sleeve and gold button detailing, this was then brought together using the tie on the waist, completing the outfit.

A visit of culture!

Recently we went on a cultural outing to the city of Nottingham, where there was many things that caught my eye, such as architecture, street style and the art.

Even something as simple as the light on this building caught my eye, with a gothic and classic feel it inspires ideas of darkness, structured shapes and mystery.

The glass roof of this ceiling was a very dramatic statement in the middle of the building, having a very modern yet classic feel at the same time.

This was just some art outside of a cafe, i liked the idea of of it being on display for the public to see, it made me think of the streets in paris, art on display, people sipping on there coffie discussing life, art and fashion.
